Pete’s New Haven Style Pizza (Only the Salad Is A Value)

Why go to a place to eat where you have to stand in line to order
for 40 minutes, lug all the dishes, silverware, napkins and drinks
by yourself to your table, then wait another 20 minutes for your
pizza, that is about the worst pizza I can remember eating,
pay $25 for the pie itself, put up with busboys that are marginal (no
waiters here, so good luck with problem solving from the staff)?

(How’s that for an introductory sentence?)

I ordered a large Arugula Pizza for my wife and I. The large pies are larger than
your standard pizza – 18 inches. So, they tout this as their value proposition.
But the taste was so borderline-average-cardboard that we didn’t want to finish the
pizza.

Maybe I’m too used to the Ledos on River Road in Bethesda with the rectangular
shape and the Pete’s 18 inch round thru me for such a loop that my frontal
cortex section of my brain (or wherever tastes are processed in my head)
rejected the 18 inch flavor.

Did I mention that the salad was above average and the spaghetti
was tasty? I ordered the Spinach Olivada salad and the sun dried
oven-dried tomatoes and Olivada dressing was a tasty combo.
Also on the plus side, the manager was well-intentioned
and the cashier that took my second order of wine (which I had to walk back up
and order and wait for – remember, no table service) did remember
my first order of wine 40 minutes earlier…so that was a huge plus!

So this is really an over-priced waste of an evening.

When I go out I want to sit and relax and be served decent food and
have decent service. I guess in the Friendship Heights
section in Northwest Washington DC, there just aren’t enough decent
restaurants that the families living in the area can walk to so
they have to put up with Pete’s.

Well, never again!

Where Not to Dine in Friendship Heights

Pete's is of no value to me - but the salads are ok

In Bethesda, Which Is Better: a Red Tomato or a Cafe Ole? I like ‘em Both, but if I had to choose…

I dunno, this is a hard one.

I think if I had a gun to my head, I’d have to choose Cafe Ole
(i’m probably going to hell since on my very first post i choose
a Washington dc restaurant for a BETHESDA blog as my favorite
BETHESDA dining hole).

My favorite Bethesda restaurant is in Tenleytown Washington DC

Wash. DC restaurant - my favorite Bethesda Dining Hole - am I a geo-moron? no, this place is that good!

The reason is that Cafe Ole has a better wine list, optional outdoor eating, real ez
parking and a more diverse menu of really, really unique dishes.

But Red Tomato is a great casual place for a Red Tomato Pizza – My favorite.
I usually have two, an arugula salad and a few glasses of red wine – Cotes de Rhone
and cabernet.

The tomato has fresh diced tomato ( oh really?), some sort of cheese lightly sprinkled
over the thing and fresh arugula. Then the guys stick it in a real brick pizza
oven and it is fresh, light and tasty. This pizza has a real healthy taste to it.
The crust is not heavy and thick but crisp and tasty.

Plus, I really like the owners. It’s a family biz. I think there are several
siblings that own it, but I primarily know Fred and Fay.

So there you have it. My first dining guide post to keep you
Bethesda residents on the straight and narrow when it
comes to what I think are the best places to eat in town.
So #1 Cafe Ole and a close 2nd Red Tomato.

#2 Fav for Me Red Tomato in Bethesda

My #2 Fav dining hole in Bethesda

So for this first post try these 2
fun, casual and moderately priced places- both have friendly owners and staff.
Maybe next time I’ll discuss my criteria.
